Registration District Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes (1837-onwards)

The Society has a number of ongoing projects to index the Gloucestershire Registration Districts birth, marriage and death registers.

Cheltenham Registration District (including Tewkesbury): Births (1837-1960), Marriages (1837-2004), Deaths (1837-1900)

Cirencester: Births (recently started), Marriages (1837-2007 except Ampney Benefice which is to 1985)

Forest of Dean: Marriages (1837-1969 some later, except Drybrook to 1952, Westbury, Monmouth & Forest Registry Offices to 1937)

Gloucester: Births (1837-1870), Marriages (1837-1963 except Framilode to 1948, Staunton & Corse not yet indexed).

North Cotswolds: Births (1837-1967), Marriages (1837-2006 except Aston sub Edge to 2004, Mickleton to 1990, Weston sub Edge to 2000, Willersey to 2000, Plymouth Brethren at Stow not yet indexed).

Stroud: Births (1837-1900 except Painswick, Rodborough, Stonehouse and Stroud), Marriages (1837-2003).

The indexes do not give exact dates, but provide the Registrars Reference to enable a certificate to be ordered from the appropriate Registrars Office (but not the GRO reference required to order online).

The fee provides for one A4 print-out for a specific name in a specific Registration District, for a specific event type (birth, marriage death), e.g. Richard Smith or Jane Smith. We will also search for one surname if required and an estimate of the costs involved can be provided on receipt of an SAE. All extra sheets will be charged at 30p each. All applications must be accompanied by an SAE, or an addressed envelope and 2 IRCs.

The marriage indexes show the Groom and Brides names, year and location of marriage. It does not give the exact date of marriage or the names of the fathers or the witnesses.
