Look at the Memorial Inscriptions Index
Memorials lend both an architectural and historical atmosphere to a churchyard. The existing population of stones began to accumulate after the Civil War and there are still many thousands of mid to late seventeenth century memorials surviving in our churchyards. The memorials and their inscriptions often contain unique and invaluable information. Victorians carried out small-scale graveyard clearances but over the last forty years, many churchyards have suffered almost complete depletion of their memorials. In most cases the latter-day iconoclasts failed to make a record of what they were destroying. The wanton destruction of many churchyards’ stock of memorials is continuing at an unprecedented rate. Future generations will not easily forgive the incalculable loss of these beautiful architectural objects and their precious historical detail.
Although it is a stable and long lasting medium on which to record detail, stone is not permanent. Up to three hundred years exposure to the elements has left its mark and many memorials have lost both their inscriptions and to a lesser extent their architectural detail. Great attention is given to the preservation of paper archives but the problem of preserving stone records has resulted in a lack of attention to the problem. For over two hundred years individuals and groups have been recording the invaluable historic detail to be found on memorials. Contributions range from an individual’s jottings from a single stone to the great general survey by Bigland in the eighteenth century. Over time many disparate surveys and notes have found their way into publications and repositories.
Since its founding in 1979, Gloucestershire Family History Society has had a programme for surveying Gloucestershire’s churchyards. As a prerequisite for recording the information to be found on the memorials, this catalogue was started in 1986 to give an indication of who had recorded what, when and where in the County. The 1986 edition did not deal with the ‘where’ question adequately and much time has been devoted to making good this deficiency. An attempt has been made to detail all memorial and burial sites and to provide an Ordinance Survey reference for them. The catalogue cannot as yet be claimed to be a comprehensive guide to the County’s memorials and burial sites and further locations and references are always sought.
Burial Sites: The remit is to record all burial sites, whatever the size or denomination, from approximately 1000 AD onwards, although many of the established parish churchyards obviously predate 1000 AD by many centuries.
Memorial Sites: If a site has a memorial in stone or wood, whether it be the one commemorating Major Bentinck Duncan Gilby’s fine memorial in St James’s church, Cheltenham, or a war memorial standing on a village green, note of its existence will one day find its way into this catalogue. The Catalogue now contains all major burial and memorial sites in the County and a high percentage of the lesser known sites. A recent, poorly represented addition, are war memorials which are to be found in virtually every town and village.
County: The boundary has not remained static over the centuries and various surveys have been included from parishes that are no longer, or have never been, in the County. The southern section of the County has been included together with the city of Bristol. Bristol’s expansion has caused difficulties and much work has been done to help the enquirer find a particular site. Ron Lewin of the Bristol and Avon Family History Society holds a vast number of transcriptions from southern Gloucestershire and has contributed to the identification and location of numerous sites in and around Bristol.
