  10. The Secret Diary of Sarah Thomas, 1860 - 1865. Edited by June Lewis. 1994 The Windrush Press, Little Window, High Street, Moreton-in-Marsh, Glos, GL56 0LL. ISBN: 0 900075 38 4. 180pp. (Out of print.)
A gem! Easily the equal of Parson Woodforde's famous 18th century diary. In narrative form, with strong Baptist links and an intriguing love story, it is centred on Fairford and Cirencester with visits to Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight, Weymouth, Dorset, London and Bath. I urge everyone to read it.
Indexing a document with many people identified by Christian name or surname only is precarious, so a careful reading of the text is essential. Linking of some names has been attempted but there is much work still to be done. Even so, a rich treasure awaits researchers of some of the 700 or so characters who people this fascinating book.
  11. Baptist Congregation at Shortwood, Nailsworth. Members who emigrated to Australia before 1864. An alphabetical list compiled 1987 by P M Walmsley, Foxhills, France Lynch, Stroud. Contributed by Kaye Purnell, NSW. Walmsley has attempted to identify the parents and sometimes siblings of those members marked as departed to Australia, so it includes the names of some Baptist Members who did not emigrate. A copy is in GLS RO (also available as a Word 6 document). Note. GLS RO Reference: D2424/4 is an indexed abstract of a church book with Members' names and places of residence in 1848. Note. Walmsley indicates only those whose residence was given as Australia; extracting the rest will be a nice little project for someone.
  12. Poor Law Emigration to Australia by A B M James. An eight-page article published in Descent the journal of the Society of Australian Genealogists Dec 1989 Contributed by Kaye Purnell, NSW. Available as four scanned zipped files. pp158 - 165 contain very valuable reference notes to the existence of documents on the Bounty System of Emigration to Australia in general and to Bisley in particular.
  13. Letters of an Australian Pioneer Family 1827-1880 edited by Graeme Bucknall & Lorna McDonald
1984 ISBN 0 9590680 0 7 ca 200pp. Limited edition of 1,000 copies (sometimes to be found on second hand book sites). Contributed by
Kaye Purnell, NSW. Produced by the Bucknall Family Association, it is based on letters written by three generations of Bucknall family members between Stroud GLS, London, Australia & South Africa 1827- 1880. The family tree at the front of the book is unpaginated but is represented in Potluck Index in lower case Roman numerals. Includes photos of many named in the family trees and of family properties in Australia. Names are extracted from the body of the book, reasonably supposed to refer to people living in or originating from Gloucestershire.
The progenitor of the Australian family, Edward Gittins Bucknall is referred to as Gittins Bucknall.
  14. Chronicles of Shortwood 1705 - 1916. by Frank Thompson Smythe, 1916. 'Being a record of events from 1705 leading up to the formation of the Church in 1716 and a history of the Church from that year to 1916. From 1716 to 1881, the place of meeting was in the hamlet of Shortwood, in the parish of Horsley, Gloucestershire, and afterwards at Nailsworth.'.
